Advanced Placement English

Advanced Placement English

Course Description

Recommended Grade Level: 12

Prerequisites: English 9, English 10, English 11, and department recommendation

Credit Earned: 1

This course is designed for seniors with a strong interest and ability in the subject. The purpose of the course is to provide motivated high school students with a college-level experience. In the AP course in English Literature and Composition, students are engaged in the careful reading of quality literature, with the emphasis on the critical approach to poetry. Writing assignments focus on the critical analysis of literary works. Students in this course also write the senior research paper, which is a graduation requirement. At the end of the year students take the AP examination for an opportunity to earn college credit. Accelerated students who have already taken the AP course and exam in Literature and Composition may choose to take AP Language and Composition. This would require a great deal of independence and self-motivation on the part of the student and would require departmental recommendation.
