Finding our School roots: Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School

By Kathryn Y. Lane and Judith O. Green

A large school stands on the north side of county route 54 between Cherry Valley and East Springfield.  This school is the result of a merger voted December 10, 1986, between Springfield Central School and Cherry Valley Central School.

However, the roots of this school go much deeper than the roots of these two towns.  Rather the roots go out to the towns of Roseboom, Middlefield, the hamlets of Salt Springville, Hessville and Sprout Brook and spread throughout the towns of Cherry Valley and Springfield.

The two districts consolidated to improve the schools’ program to meet the state requirement and to offer more to the students.  Buildings in both districts were old and needed major repairs.  On September 30, 1987, the consolidated districts voted for a new building.  Construction started in the spring of 1988.  The school was finished in the fall of 1989.  Classes began here in September 1989.

The school we are in today is a result of the past – of people, places and the decisions they made to provide for the best education possible.  Because of their sacrifices and vision, we are where we are today.

District schools in Roseboom, Middlefield, Springfield, Minden, Cherry Valley and Canajoharie make up the Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School District.
