Technology Education at Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School offers a wide range of courses that includes material from 2D design to 3D construction processes. Because of the wide range of Technology courses offered, both Regents as well as Non-Regents will find the program of value.
 
According to Section 100.5 of the Commissioner’s Regulations; students with an extended sequence of at least five units of credit in Occupational Education subject (Technology Education), art, or music may substitute a three-credit sequence, or its equivalent, in any subject for the three-credit language Regents high school diploma requirement.

​Did you know…?
  • Half of the 0ne-unit Introduction to Occupations requirement is fulfilled through integration into Systems and Foundations courses.
  • Three-unit sequences are easily expandable to five units.
  • Courses like Architectural Drawing, Computer Graphics, or Design and Drawing for Production can used to satisfy their art/music requirement for occupational education sequence students. Any student to fulfill the art/music requirement can use design and Drawing for Production.
  • Students pursuing a five-unit sequence in occupational education can be exempted from the three-unit foreign language requirement.
  • Sequences in Technology Education are approved for Regents credit.
  • Technology Education can help students meet their career goals.
  • Technology Education meets the new Math, Science, and Technology (MST) standards required by the board of regents.

INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOSHOP (1/2 CREDIT) (20 WEEKS)

This course is an introduction to Photoshop processes and techniques. Students will learn the editing options available within the Photoshop program beginning with the basic toolbox icons and related fly out pallets. The course will address information pertaining to navigating all elements within the Photoshop program including command procedures, editing, paint and retouching. Each section will be broken down into a simplified level of operation and students will have the opportunity to learn through lectures, demonstrations and personal topic exploration. As students become familiar with general processes they will advance up to more complicated adjustments and features within the program. There will also be information pertaining to web design modifications, production and adaptation. This course will serve a valuable skill for students in a variety of areas ranging from photographic editing to personalized graphic advertisement for independent businesses. (Pre-requisite – 9th grade level students and above)

TECHNICAL SCULPTURE (1/2 CREDIT) (20 WEEKS)

This is a course that provides an essential link between the aesthetics of Fine Arts and the processes related to tools, equipment and materials in Industrial Technology. The field of sculpture requires a strong working knowledge consisting of diverse applications. The Technical Sculpture course incorporates the use of wood, metal, ceramics and a variety of other materials. Students will learn the importance of conceptual integrity within their work and the preliminary strategies of prototype construction prior to the ultimate full scale production. The course will address elements pertaining to art history and contemporary prevalent artists. There will be routine critique sessions reviewing the direction of student work in progress and eventually the finished sculpture. Students will also be taught the responsibilities associated with a public art commission and installation. As a work experience process the class will design and create a public art piece as a permanent installation on the CVSCS campus. (Pre-requisite Courses – 7th Grade Tech / 8th Grade Tech)

DRAWING AND DESIGN FOR PRODUCTION (1 CREDIT) (40 WEEKS)

This course introduces students to the full process of designing a project from concept through completion. The class begins with a review of technical drawing techniques including orthographic multi view projections, isometric projections and auxiliary views for detailed information. There is also a focus on perspective drawing, cabinet projections and cavalier projections. The development of these two dimensional skill will prepare students to properly design preliminary work for all projects. In addition to dimensioned pictorial illustrations students will also be required to develop a material data sheet and sequence data sheet. Students will then receive individual instruction on the use of a variety of tools and power equipment that are necessary to complete the construction of their project. The project will be completed in alignment with the student’s personal specifications. This course allows them to create objects that are specific to their own desires and learn appropriate methods of construction. (Pre-requisite Courses – 7th Grade Tech / 8th Grade Tech)

MATERIAL PROCESSING (1/2 CREDIT) (20 WEEKS)

Technology is an area of exploration that confronts an endless list of questions. Determining the best solution often requires a technician to be knowledgeable about a wide range of potential options before solving the dilemma. The Material Processing course introduces students to a variety of materials, their distinctive characteristics and appropriate applications. Students work with metals, woods, ceramics, plastics, plaster and glass as well as learning the processes related to each material. The course includes two dimensional design theory, preliminary project data, materials knowledge and construction processes. Students must routinely demonstrate a working knowledge of a wide range of materials as they construct various projects. They address specific objectives with appropriate materials and discuss related state of the art processes being implemented in industry. The course will prepare students to diversify the construction methodologies they normally rely upon and improve the structural integrity of their designs. (Pre-requisite Courses – 7th Grade Tech / 8th Grade Tech)

CONSTRUCTION (1/2 CREDIT) (20 WEEKS)

The Construction course educates students in a wide range of building skills and information. The initial focus addresses preliminary planning and design including the areas of sketching, orthographic projections, design scale and isometric projections. Students explore the elements of site topography, major utility access and climate issues as preliminary site considerations. Architectural renderings and construction plans are produced as a resource for students to refer to during the construction phase. Each student constructs a scaled model demonstrating a working knowledge of framing procedures and elements related to floor plan design. The course also addresses electrical wiring, plumbing and code specifications. Students will also construct independent projects demonstrating equipment and materials knowledge throughout the course curriculum. There is a strong emphasis on safety procedures within the field of equipment use and job site procedures. Students will receive a strong foundation of construction processes and skills that offer application in a variety of directions. (Pre-requisite Courses – 7th Grade Tech / 8th Grade Tech)
